About Morgan Opera House

Gloria Ann Barnell Peter Playwright Competition

The Gloria Ann Barnell Peter Playwright Competition

The friends and family of Gloria Ann Barnell Peter, a playwright, actress, and lover of history, have established a fund at the Morgan Opera House to honor her memory and to encourage the writing and production of theatre art.

Criteria for submission:

  • Work must be in typed format.
  • Submission must be an original work, previously unpublished, one or two acts; no limit of form.
  • Work must depict an historical event or historical fiction.
  • Because of limited backstage/off stage space, it is strongly recommended that the production require a maximum of no more than 10 actors.
  • Submitted plays should have a minimum 45-60 minute production time and a maximum of 90 minutes.

Clarifications: We operate under the assumption that all original works are the intellectual property of their authors. Voluntarily offering a script for review precludes that the author will allow the MOH to make sufficient copies in order to produce two performances in the following fall. No royalties will be paid, nor will the MOH incur any other financial obligations. Scripts not used will be destroyed.

All scripts will become property of the Morgan Opera House. We do not intend to make any copyright claims to any script submitted for consideration. Upon your written request to have the material returned, we will package the material, ask for mailing cost, apprise you of the cost, and will return the script upon receipt of your check or money order.

The MOH prefers to work directly with the author regarding production details, agents notwithstanding.

Announcement of 2010-11 and 2011-12 winners: 10 April 2011

Announcement of 2008-09 and 2009-10 winners: 27 April 2009
